SUKARNO ASKED TO EXPLAIN

DJAKARTA, August 29.
President Sukarno has been asked to explain his position in the October Communist coup attempt.
Dr. Adnan Bujung Nasution, an influential member of Parliament and leader of the powerful Indonesian intellectual Action Front, told Parliament last night that President Sukarno “should clear up his position on the indications of the October coup.” Parliament was debating the President’s independence day speech for which he has I been strongly criticised. In the speech he said Indonesia would restore diploma■tic relations with Malaysia I only after general elections I had been held in Sarawak and | Sabah and Indonesia would I not rejoin the United Nations I until after the holding of the ’ conference of the “new emerg- : ing forces.” Instability Caused Dr. Nasution said the President’s speech had created political and economic instability in the country. “While we are awaiting the explanation of the President’s oosition in the coup he should be given a long furlough and General Suharto should be Acting President,” he said. The Indonesian Foreign
Minister, Mr Adam Malik, said that the time has come for Indonesia to rejoin the United Nations.
Addressing a mass rally at Menes, West Java, yesterday, Mr Malik said the Indonesian people should be aware that improvement of the nation’s economy was impossible without co-operation with other nations.
