“The Press” In 1866

August 31

The “Advertiser” of the 24th inst., says:—lt is proposed that a Gas Company (limited) should be formed, and that there should be a thousand shares at £lO each subscribed for by the public; and the promoters of the movement expect every success. It is hardly necessary to point out what would be the advantages of having the town lighted with gas, as those who have occasion to be out on a dark night now know. When the company is formed as no doubt it will be, it is intended to erect the works in Courtenay place, from which the main pipe will lead down Lambton quay to this end of Thorndon,

where an auxiliary holder will be placed. Consumers will be charged £1 per 1000 feet and meters can be rented at a percentage on the cost of them. It is not anticipated that the whole works will cost more than £6500, and that amount is to be raised by 10s allotments on the shares, and three calls of £2 each, extending over 12 months. The balance of the shares will not be required until the works have to be extended and a dividend has been paid. The rate at which the lighting by gas is to be charged will amount to about a penny per hour per burner; and it must be remembered that each burner will give a continuous and steady light equal to that given by nearly 20 candles.
