Tramway Relics

Old tramway equipment will be given to the Tramway Historical Society by the Christchurch Transport Board. The society yesterday asked for an old motor generator set, a traction motor, an isolating switch, some old pieces of tram rails, axles and wheels, a length of trolley wire, two old compressed-air reservoirs and a scroll that was once in the power-house. Sub Judice Mr D. W. Bain asked, at the Canterbury University Council’s meeting yesterday, whether any action had been taken by the Professorial Board against a student for “an act of grave discourtesy” when the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) opened the new science buildings 10 days ago. The Vice-Chan-cellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) said that, as the matter was sub judice, he preferred not to comment, except to say that certain action had been taken. Latin Praise When he reported to the Canterbury University Council yesterday that the new telephone exchange and computer centre at Ilam were finished three weeks ahead of schedule, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury (Professor N. C. Phillips) tossed in a Latin phrase which he transla'ed, “I would that all things were like this.” The contractor was the Fletcher Construction Company, Ltd., and the architects were Messrs Hall and Mackenzie. Mr McCallum Retires Mr John McCallum has retired as managing director of J. C. Williamson Theatres, Ltd., it was announced today. He will however, continue to be chairman of the board of Williamson-Powell International Films Proprietary, Ltd. Mr McCallum said: “There has been some measure of disagreement—we have agreed to disagree, and I am sorry. Lyttelton Museum The Lyttelton Borough Council has made a large room in the Lyttelton community centre available to a group which is anxious to preserve items of historical interest to the port. The group has formed a Lyttelton Historical Repository and Museum Committee, of which Mr B. N. Norris is chairman and Mr N. S. Kirby secretary. The committee members are Messrs J. Gilmore, C. M. Fletcher and R. J. Stanley. Mr Norris said old photographs, records and maps of Lyttelton would be welcomed by the committee.
