Teachers’ President
The Post Primary Teachers’ Association has installed Mr J. S. Webster, of New Plymouth. as president. He has served on the national executive for several years and as vice-president for the last 12 months.
Mr Webster is principal of the New Plymouth Boys' High School, from which he has been granted a year’s leave of absence to take up his new position.
Mr Webster was bom in Ngakawau and, after primary education on the West Coast, he attended the Boys’ High
School, Palmerston North. After studying at the Auckland Teachers’ College and at Auckland University, he graduated with honours in mathematics in 1935, subsequently gaining the diploma in education.
After several years’ teaching in primary and in district high schools, Mr Webster served in New Zealand and overseas as an education officer with the R.N.Z.A.F. before resuming as senior secondary assistant at Howick and then at Waiuku District High Schools. In 1953 he was appointed first assistant at Mt. Roskill Grammar School, becoming principal of Te Awamutu College two years later. From this position, Mr Webster was appointed to his present post as principal of New Plymouth Boys’ High School in 1958.
During the last year he has been a teacher representative on the Government Superannuation Board and on the University Entrance Board. In 1964, Mr Webster was president of the Taranaki Rugby Union. He is also a past-president of the Rotary Club in New Plymouth.
