Illegal Migrants Ask For Leniency
(.V.Z. Press Association—Copyright)
SUVA, August 27.
Sixteen young Indian men have written from Suva to the Minister of Immigration (Mr Shand) urging more lenient action against Indians who have illegally remained in New Zealand after expiry of their visitors’ permits.
They say leniency will encourage the Indians to give themselves up and return to Fiji. All 16 signatories have visited New Zealand and four are married to New Zealand girls. Their letter says: “We believe that if you can see your way clear to assure illegal immigrants that no action other than deportation will be
taken against them if they give themselves up, many will take the opportunity to return to Fiji. “We believe that there are many Indians in New Zealand who are frightened to hand themselves over to the authorities even though they would like to return to Fiji. “They fear court action and the shame which their circumstances would bring on their families in Fiji.”
