Basketball Tour In Prospect

An invitation had been extended through the touring University of Adelaide team for a New Zealand Universities basketball side to play in Australia in May next year, said the chairman of the New Zealand Universities Men’s Basketball Council (Mr A. Forrester) last evening. Mr Forrester returned to Christchurch yesterday after coaching the Canterbury University basketball side in the national tournament at Auckland. The team went through the competition undefeated to become the first in the Dominion to win the universities tournament and its local inter-club competition in one year. tn the Australian unlverslttea championships in Brisbane. Five members of the Canterbury team were chosen for the New Zealand Universities team by the aole selector (Mr R. Williams, of Auckland). M. Askew, the highest scorer in the side, was appointed captain. The others were C. Morris, G. Williams. P. Stigley and J. Stead A sixth player, J. Siong. was chosen for the New Zealand Universities B team. The only member of the Canterbury side not to win higher honours was D. de Lisle who injured an ankle and was able to play in only two games. The only match Canterbury lest at the tournament was a noncompetition game against the University of Adelaide. The Australians won 62-46. Canterbury’s competitive record was: beat Otago 42-11, boat Victoria 60-50, beat Lincoln 100-21. beat Auckland 41-31, beat Massey 77-11.

Individual scores: Askew 93, Stead IT, Stigley 67. Morris 53, Siong 42, Williams 22, de Lisle 11 (In two games). The Canterbury women’s team also went through undefeated but was disqualified for having a player who was not atttending the required number ef lectures. It beat the eventual winner. Auckland. 70-14.
