Farmers Urged To ‘Get Out Of Mud’
(New Zealand Press Association)
HAMILTON, August 21.
“It is high time a lot of farmers in this country got their feet out of the mud,” said Mr M. G. Hewitt, president of the Waikato Federated Farmers.
“It is alarming that so many farmers are crying down their own organisation when they should be giving it every assistance,” he said. Mr Hewitt was commenting at the branch’s meeting on a remit from the Putaruru subprovincial branch “that the Government’s intention regarding the blood-testing and milk-sampling procedures for testing brucellosis and its prevention be obtained.” After discussion the remit was withdrawn. Mr Hewitt said the federation should be doing everything possible to prevent the disease rather than questioning any method put forward. “Many of our new markets are bringing in new hygiene regulations we never dreamed of, and we as farmers must keep up with these changes instead of saying the Government is trying to put one over us.” said Mr Hewitt.
“This philosophy of many of our older farmers is no good. “Thank heavens we have a younger generation of farmers who are aw’ake to what is going on and are prepared to accept the changes," he said.
