Britain ‘Not Looking For Handouts 9

WELLINGTON, August 21.
The United Kingdom was not looking for hand-outs from other countries in the field of trade, the executive secretary of the British Committee for Exports to New Zealand (Mr J. S. Porter) said in Wellington tonight.
“British exporters are determined that their products should be as competitive as possible in both price and quality ” he said. Mr Porter said he had come to New Zealand to confer with members of the New Zea-land-British Trade Committee and examine various aspects of trade between the two countries. The Committee for Exports
to New Zealand is part of the British National Export Council, and is headed by Mr A. Ross, formerly of New Zealand. Mr Porter said New Zealand’s forgeign exchange pro- ' blems and the limitations these placed on the country’s ability to import were apprei elated. j “But we shall continue to explore strenuously the New Zealand market,” he said. ' While in New Zealand he I would be preparing the way
for several future trade missions. Mr Porter will spend a week In Wellington, and after visiting Christchurch and Auckland will leave for London on September 5.
