Critical Of Run Plans
I? UN plans are being undertaken at a faster rate than is justified, in the view of Mr David McLeod, of Grasmere, Cass. Speaking at a meeting of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers’ meat and wool executive, he said he thought runholders should take a critical look at these plans. Mr McLeod, who is chairman of the Tussock Grasslands and Mountain Lands Institute, and a member of the South Island high country committee of Federated Farmers, said he had been able to observe the working of run plans throughout the South Island. Many of the experts associated with plans were not men who were associated with
the practical running of a station. They did not have the same appreciation as the runholder of such things as stock management, or the cost of labour for fencing, and where to obtain it Mr McLeod said he was not alone in his concern on this matter. Mr P. C. Ensor, of Double Hill (also a member of the high country committee) was very concerned at the rate at which run plans were being introduced in the South Canterbury Catchment Board’s area. Urging that runholders should take a critical look at the run plan system, Mr McLeod said no-one was so expert that they could say exactly what was going to happen following the introduction of a run plan.
