Less Coal Produced
Coal production In New Zealand in 1965 totalled 2,659.034 tons, a decrease of 217,938 tons on the previous year, says the annual report of the Mines Department tabled in Parliament. State coal mines accounted for 1.516.751 tons of the total production. There was a drop in production in all the mining areas, but the largest decrease was in the Waikato, as less coal was required by the Meremere power station. District production in tons was as follows with the decrease in parenthesis: North Auckland, 1621 (556): Waikato and Taranaki, 1,347,052 (164.446): Nelson, 14.278 (3874): Buller. 261.905 (4656); Reefton, 97,876 (8450); Grey Valley, 409.790 (2403); Canterbury, 14.114 (3242): Otago. 126.741 (6756); Southland. 385,657 (23,555). More than half of the tonnage of coal produced, 1,837,884, was of the subbituminous type with bituminous (663,222), lignite (157.863) and anthracite (65) completing the production. The number of mines operating last year was 127 (85 underground and 42 opencast). a decrease of nine from the previous year.
