Children's Book Week
For the first week of the school holidays the use of the major part of Dominion Motors showroom has been granted for the Children’s Book Week exhibition.
Throughout the year a wideiy-representative Children’s Book Week Committee has planned. Specially-chosen new publications have been obtained from overseas and New Zealand publishers. Many new books will be seen for the first time in New Zealand
at this display. The Canterbury Public Library'. Teachers’ College Library and particularly the Country Library Service will lend books for display. These books have been specially-chosen for their merits as children’s publications. Books wil) be set out so that they can be seen readily in various topics such as picture books for young children, adventure, science, ballet, sport, reference, etc.
Each year some special features are planned. Because this is the Beatrix Potter centennial year, there will be a special display of her books. Added interest will be centred around a display of figures
representing Beatrix Potter characters. Another theme chosen for special emphasis is art. There will be a special section showing books about various types of art and craft. With the help and co-operation of both primary and secondary school art advisers, a special display of school art and craft work will have a great deal of interest. The New Zealand Library Association has produced a pamphlet setting out its recommended books on art.
Book Week competitions have always been well received by children. The response to both the poster competition and the competitions for written book reviews and descriptions of favourite characters, has been very good indeed.
