It is possible that neither of Canterbury's two leading women athletes, Mrs V. I. Young and Mrs M. A. Stephen, will be engaged in active competition during the coming summer. When Mrs Young arrived in Christchurch yesterday from the Commonwealth Games at Jamaica, she announced her retirement as of that moment. For Mrs Stephen the
situation is not as clear cut. The difficulties she experienced at Kingston with her Achilles tendon have yet to be put in their proper perspective and until she knows how serious her injury is likely to prove she cannot say if she will retire or continue active participation in the sport. Mrs Stephen said yesterday that she would be in a position to state her future plans in two weeks’ time.
