SOBERS, KANHAI DEFY ENGLAND

(NZ.PA Reuter— Copyright' LONDON. England, under its new captain, D. B. Close, did well to contain the West Indies to 268 runs on the opening day of the fifth and final cricket test at the Oval.

The West Indies' total would have looked very sick had R. B. Kanhai and G. S. Sobers not been in such cracking form. Kanhai hammered the England attack for 104 runs and Sobers scored a masterly 81. The West Indies, who have won three and drawn one ofi the previous four tests, quickly struck when England batted and captured G. Boycott's 'wicket with only sixruns on the board. At the close England was 20 for one. England was in command in the morning session, when few wickets fell for 76. and again during the final stages of the West Indies innings, but in between Kanhai and Sobers scored freely and delighted the 25.000 sun-baked crowd. Kanhai scored his first century in England. Four runs later he was out after batting for 3|hr and hitting 14 fours. He and Sobers —they c’me together with four wickets down for 74—added 122 at a run a minute for the fifth wicket WEST INDIES First Innings C. C. Hunte, b Higgs 1 E. D. McMorris, b Snow .. 1*
