Protest At Death Sentence
A telegram to the Greek Government protesting at the death sentence on a Greek soldier who refused to be conscripted for religious reasons has been sent by the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation of Australia and New Zealand. The telegram is addressed to the Prime Minister, Greek Government, Athens, and reads: “We strongly protest against death sentence on Greek soldier for refusing to bear arms for religious reasons. Even Hitler, Germany, exempted Quakers from bearing arms.” Copies of the telegram have also been sent to the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, London: International Amnesty, Wellington; and the honorary acting Consul-Gen-eral for Greece in Wellington (Mr T. Hatzis).
