Sarapu Wins Chess
(N.Z. Press Association! AUCKLAND. O. Sarapu, of Auckland, has won the zone 10 international chess tournament which ended In Auckland yesterday. He now becomes an international chessmaster, with the right to compete in the candidates’ tournament which will be played In Europe next year to find a challenger for the world championship.
He drew his final game with E. de Castro < Phill i pines > to score 61 points in nine games. The Australian champion, D. Hamilton, beat R. Naranja (Philippines), who was tied with Sarapu for the lead at the end of the eighth round.
Results: Eighth Round.—Sarapu beat Naranja: D. DJamal (Indonesia! drew with R. P. Brent (Australia).
Ninth Round.—Hamilton beat Naranja, Brent beat Tan Lian Seng (Singapore), Sarapu drew with de Castro, Djamal drew with Chan Ping Yuen (Hong Kong), R. J. Sutton (New Zealand) drew with L. Sitompul (Indonesia).
Final Points.—Sarapu 6), Na ranja 6. Djamal, Sutton 54 Hamilton 5, Chan Ping Yuen 31 de Castro, Tan Lian Seng 3 Sitompul, Brent 21.
