VIETNAM BATTLE
Australians In Action
(Special Crspdt. N.Z P.A.) BARIA (South Vietnam), August 19. Outnumbered eight to one, and under heavy fire for more than three hours, an Australian company yesterday battled grimly for survival against hundreds of Viet Cong main force troops. The Australian losses were 17 killed and 26 wounded. Virtually surrounded and under fire from every direction the company had only a handful of ammunition rounds between them when reinforcements arrived. The company’s battle was in heavy jungle in central Phuoc Tuy province. The Australians were supported by New Zealand artillerymen. For Australian troops it was the biggest battle since Korea.
