The Public Service
Sir,—The militant attitude rapidly being adopted by the Public Service Association alarms me and I cannot believe that what smacks of disloyalty to its employers is endorsed by the majority of civil servants. Mr Tucker states the Government expects employees to correct what he calls the drastic effects of “Government mistakes.” He mentions evidence of collusion between the States Services Commission and private employers on rates payable to the Public Service. As an employer. I only wish this were true and quote the following wage rates, private employers’ award and Government salary scale respectively: Males, with
School Certificate, £7 2s 6d a week, £520 per annum: with University Entrance, £8 3s 6d a week, £595 per annum. I cannot compete with taxfinanced fancy wages and have long ceased trying to recruit male office staff vital to provide a pool of male managerial prospects for future years.—Yours, etc., EMPLOYER.
