Institute’s ‘Room’ Parade Popular

The Bromley Country Women’s Institute may well have started a new style in fashion parades. Slinky models and sophisticated clothes were dispensed with at the parade presented as part of the institute’s ninth birthday party.

Instead, members presented a "room” parade, with models showing appropriate clothes to be worn in the bedroom, lounge, bathroom, laundry and wash-house.

The first model to appear was “Barbara Bedroom,” who preferred warmth rather than style. She wore a low-waisted singlet dress of thick wool with a gathered woollen frill at the bodice and long woollen underpants.

An alarm clock made a striking pendant round her neck. She carried a brush, mirror, and comb set. and wore a lampshade-style hat. A draped dress of pink chenille and a crochet stole hat were modelled by “Lucy Lounge.” She wore carpet slippers and carried a magazine bag and a picture of a bunch of roses.

“Betty Bathroom” appeared in a “go-go” towel dress and a puffy plastic cap, carrying a bag of toilet requirements. A baby doll dress in many colours and textures was shown by “Katie Kitchen.”

Her col lander-style hat will be most useful in the hot weather ahead. Small kitchen utensils were used to form a necklace and belt.

“Lois Laundering” looked most appealing in a dress of tissue paper, which featured pastel coloured floating panels. She wore her hat at a rakish angle, tied on with a red ribbon with a matching bow. and carried perfumed accessories.

“Wilhemena Washhouse" chose an all-in-one combination suit and carried a wooden stick useful for lifting clothes out of the copper. The birthday cake was made by Mrs 1. Teale, iced by Mrs I. Chamberlain and cut by Mrs C. D. Newton. The candles were lit by’ nine original members and blown out by Mrs I. Malequin, a former member.

Competition trophies and prizes were presented by Mrs G. MacLachlan. Most points were gained by Mesdames I. Greeves, E. Simmons and I. Taylor.
