Growers Keeping Best Fruit

(New Zealand Press Association/

AUCKLAND, August 18.

During last season growers had not cooperated with the Apple and Pear Board in sending loose fruit for resale, the vice-president of the Fruitgrowers’ Federation, and president of the Auckland branch (Mr L. W. Smith) said yesterday.

It appeared that growers had retained their best fruit for private sale, he said. The board received only 10 per cent of preferred grades in Delicious and 90 per cent of other grades. Other varieties showed similar small proportions of preferred sizes. Only the Golden Delicious was supplied in reasonable grades, and it was thought this would be difficult to sell. Mr. Smith said the time might have come when the district advisory committee would recommend to the board selected growers, who would supply reasonable grades. This would mean that some growers would no longer supply the board.
