COUNCIL FOR THE AGED

Membership Addition

The Christchurch Junior Chamber will be invited to nominate a member to sit on the council and. executive of the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council. This was decided at the annual meeting of the council , last night, The chairman of the executive (Dr. H. R. Donald) said the council was impressed by the vitality and originality of the younger members of the community. The council had been functioning for 14 years and none of its members was getting any younger. “Of all the organisations representing youth and vigour in the community, the executive feels that the Junior Chamber is outstanding. We feel that this council cannot afford to be without its advice,” Dr. Donald said. A proposal that steps he taken to give the council statutory authority to administer its homes for the aged was referred to the executive for investigation. Such authority would require the passing of a private bill by Parliament. A seminar for executives of organisations concerned with the care of the aged will be held early next year. Miss C. M. Ryan (Catholic Social Services) said it was proposed that the seminar should consist of an interchange of ideas on policy, administration, housing and clubs, and matters of? universal interest. Mrs H. Wales was re-elected vice-president of the council. Messrs W. H. Larcombe and M. C. Tipping were re-elected treasurer and auditor respectively.
