Delegation To Council On Tai Tapu Town Hall

The financial problems of the Tai Tapu Town Hall would be considered by the finance committee of the Halswell County Council at its next meeting, the council was told last evening. A meeting of the finance committee had been waited on by a deputation from the hall committee. The deputation was told the question of a special rate to provide for future expenditure was difficult as the Tai Tapu township was partly in Halswell and partly in Paparua. The council was against striking a rate but it would be possible to do this if the council took over the hall which the hall committee would not want.

For the deputation Mr J. Baker said the committee’s income was £l2O a year, and running costs were from £5O to £l6O a year. The committee had raised £2300 for the new amenity block but this had nearly all been spent. The hall roof needed repair and the floor needed lifting, which would cost about £2500. The hall was used about four or five times a week but many of these meetings could not be charged for as the hall was being used by youth organisations. The committee felt a hall was necessary but could not see where the revenue was to come from, Mr Baker said. Balance sheets and plans for

future extensions were produced.

The possibility of borrowing £2500 was discussed and Mr P. Cunningham, of the delegation, said the committee would prefer the council to make an annual grant, when the committee would do its share of the work.

The delegation was told any increased grant would be in next year’s estimates. Nothing further could be done this year as estimates had already been framed.
