Mao’s New Deputy

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HONG KONG, Aug 18. China’s Defence Minister, Marshal Lin Plao, appears to have emerged from the current purge as top deputy to the party chairman, Mr Mao Tse-tung, the “New York Times” reported today. At a Peking rally attended by one million people and held to support the purge that has been sweeping China under the name of a “cultural revolution,” Marshal Lin stood next to Mr Mao and was described as his “dearest comrade.” Reporting Mr Mao’s appearance at the rally, Peking Radio broke all precedence by listing Marshal Lin first among the other leaders present, who included the chairman of the republic, Mr Lin Shao-chi, and the Prime Minister, Mr Chou En-lai. Mr Chou was ranked next to Marshal Lin, followed by another rising star, Mr Tao Chu, who replaced Mr Liu Ting-yi as head of the party's propaganda department.
