REMARK BY BEATLES
(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) BOSTON. August 18. World controversy over John Lennon’s remark that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ appears to have died down. Apologies for the reference were made when the group arrived in Chicago to begin its American tour, and have been repeated at almost every stop since. At a Toronto press conference yesterday, Lennon apneared to reverse his stand—he said he would recommend the “basic idea” of Christianity to young people. Fellow-Beatle George Harrison said: “There are lots of things so right about Christianity. but people don't follow it.”
