LONDON, August 18
The Soviet Prime Minister, Mr Kosygin, was quoted in London yesterday as warning the United States that further escalation of the Vietnam war could bring “immediate danger of military conflict beyond the limits of South-east Asia.”
Mr Kosygin’s warning came in a letter replying to an appeal from the philosopher. Earl Russell, that the Soviet Air Force defend Vietnam against American air attacks. Earl Russell’s peace foundation organisation issued a statement saying the 94-year-old philosopher had conferred for three hours with the Soviet charge d’affaires. Mr Valdillen Vasev. In the course of the meeting, the statement said, the
envoy stressed that Mr Kosygin’s letter was a declaration of intent that Russia was ready to aid North Vietnam with its air force, as well as its ground forces, the moment a request came from Hanoi. Mr Kosygin said in his letter: “If the Americans do not give up their criminal policy and proceed to increase their aggression, there will be immediate danger of military conflict beyond the limits of South-east Asia.”
