Thorpe, threaded steadily through the field, the first two reaching the front after dropping Thorpe. In the sprint, Cleary had to work hard to hold off one of the middle-markers, B. P Whitfield, who headed in Holland comfortably. In the combined Avon-Chrtst-church 50 miles—a reverse Round the Bays—the field was well split on the hills round Lyttelton, and only five finished.
