TABLE TENNIS Marlborough Title To Armstrong

In a disappointing flnai, J. Armstrong (Canterbury) de. feated Wellington’s M. Borlase to win the Marlborough table tennis championships at Blenheim. Borlase, who has just been selected for the North Island team to play the South Island in Christchurch on August 27, continually made errors during the final with his loop drive not proving as devastating against Armstrong as it did when he beat Armstrong a week ago during a representative contest. Armstrong himself played as well as he has the whole season, defending brilliantly and occasionally stepping in for a powerful well-placed drive. Upsets during earlier rounds Included the defeat of the Canterbury representative, H. P. Holt, bv the young Canterbury junior, J. Weir, and the dismissal of fourth seed N. B. Radford (Canterbury) by Wellington’s F. Jarman.

In the women’s singles, Mrs M. J. Shadbolt (Canterbury) retained her title by defeating Miss A. Eden (Nelson) in a close contest. Miss Eden was not considerably troubled by Mrs Shadbolt’s heavy chop and only the attack of Mrs Shadbolt saved her from possible defeat. In the semi-finals Miss Eden caused a surprise by defeating Miss G. Kemp (Nelson) in four games. In the men’s doubles D. Thorner and Borlase (Wellington) won the final, by defeating Holt and Armstrong (Canterbury) who could find no answer for the modern game of their North Island opponents while Mrs Shadbolt and Miss Kemp were never troubled in the women’s doubles. In the mixed doubles Thorner and Mrs Shadbolt did not appear so devastating in play as they did on paper but were successful in winning, although extended to five games by the unseeded pair of Borlase (Wellington) and Mrs M. Tomlinson (Marlborough). Results: — Singles Men. —Quarter-finals: M. Borlase (Wellington) beat R. Foster (Wellington), 21-15, 13-21, 21-18, 22-20. D. Thorner (Wellington)
