Railway Change

The General Manager of Railways, Mr A. T. Gandell, who will retire on October 31 this year, will be succeeded by the Assistant General Manager, Mr I. Thomas. Mr Gandell, who has been with the Railways Department for 46 years, was appointed general manager in 1955. He was entitled to retire on completion of 40 years' service in 1960 but at the invitation of the Government, continued in office for two further three-year terms. Mr Thomas, who is 53, joined the railways in 1929 as a cadet in Wellington. After serving as information officer, and later administrative assistant in the general manager's office, he was appointed chief administration officer to the general manager in ■ 1951. Ten years later Mr Thomas assumed the management j of the Railway's Department's commercial branch. and his appointment as j second assistant general I manager followed in 1963. |
