THE PILL APPROVED
Cautious U.S. Endorsement /N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 15. Birth control pills were given cautious Federal approval today as the best contraceptive available. The Food and Drug Administration reported after a nine-month study that scientific research was still too inadequate to prove or disprove claims of tragic side effects. On the recommendation of a 10-member advisory committee of leading obstetricians and gynaecologists, the administration said it would lift its current requirement that manufacturers recommend that women not use the pills for more than two years. At the same time it said it
would continue to warn doctors against the possibility of side effects resulting from use of the pill.
