It is not long to wait now for the visit to New Zealand of Mr Anthony Opie, an appraiser of porcelain, furniture, and silver for Sothebys. A New Zealander, Mr Opie is to advise on collections in the main cities of New Zealand and Australia. Mr Opie says he is convinced that there are in these countries owners who have in their homes important examples of fine art which they do not recognise. It is his hope that he will be able to advise them on the correct designations. Welcome, Mr Opie. You

are likely to be very busy indeed, if what you say is true. Householders everywhere will be turning up everything that is likely to interest you. You’re probably not the right man for a couple of what might be Strads up in the attic, but what about our candlesticks? They were purchased at the Wellington Centennial Exhibition as long ago as 1940, and by now they must surely have acquired some sort of value. There are some lovely paintings, several of which have recently appeared on calenders and if some of the porcelain unfortunately carries the imprint of
