Support For Tunnel

The ChristchurchLyttelton Road Tunnel Authority had not quibbled when it came to building an £ll,OOO retaining wall and it had done all that had been asked of it, said the Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr J. B. Collett) at a meeting of the Lyttelton Borough last evening.

Mr Collett said he was speaking both as a member of the council and as a member of the tunnel authority. He did not think the council should demand too much and that it should accept some responsibility for the tunnel. Ratepayers had benefited considerably by work done at the tunnel entrance. The council agreed that all formed road in front of the tunnel should be rededicated as a street and that the authority be permitted use of the portion of road above the tunnel for access to the tunnel fans.

A motion put by Cr. E. A. Camfield that the council look into parking in the borough after parking restrictions on the waterfront and refer the matter to the traffic committee was passed. Cd. G. C. Adams said it was hard to get parking in

the port, especially in the lower regions, since the Harbour Board had prevented parking on the waterfront. The cost of four pensioners’ cottages in Winchester street was £11,069, the Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) told the council. The work had been estimated to cost £10,637. The land and buildings had cost £1615 and the cottages cost £8289 to build, £92 more than estimated. A fence, wages, and sundry items not on the estimate cost £314. Permits Issued.—Thirteen permits for drainage and plumbing worth £790 were issued last month, said the borough health inspector (Mr J L. O’Callaghan). All work had been inspected and passed. Electrical Work.—Reticulation of both power and street lighting for the Foster terrace subdivision was now complete and alive, said the report from the electrical overseer (Mr R. P. Miller). Eight concrete lighting standards with 60 watt fluorescent fittings had been erected. There was an increased loading of 41.77 kw for July.

Sewer Extensions.—Propress on the Diamond Harbour sewer extensions was being maintained and further stretches of sewer aain had been laid in Marine drive and Te Aro cres-

cent More rock had been encountered in Marine drive near the fire station but only minimal blasting had been required as engineers had altered the levels.

Water Supply.—ln July, 21,320,000 gallons of water was pumped into the main reservoir at Lyttelton, nearly three million gallons less than in July last year. The Heathcote main meter recorded 5,736,000 gallons, an increase of 68,000 gallons, and 40,800 gallons went through the Horotane meter, a decrease of 800 gallons. Swings and Slides.—A request by the Diamond Har bour Burgesses’ Association for permission to erect swings and slides was granted. Cr. E. A. Camfield said they could be erected below Godley House and would be a desirable amenity.
