Economic Self-help In South America

(N.Z.P.A Reuter—Copyright)

BOGOTA (Columbia), August 15

The presidents of Chile, Venezuela and Colombia last night began a three-day conference on how to speed up economic integration in South America.

The conference is also being attended by representatives of Peru and Ecuador. The Columbian President, Mr Carlos Lleras Restrepo and his Cabinet were at the international airport to greet President Raul Leoni of Venezuela and President Eduardo Frei Montalva of Chile.

Peru’s representative is Dr. Fernando Schwalb, a former prime minister and for-

eign minister. Ecuador is represented by a former president, Mr Galo Plaza Lasso. Colombia’s Government took strict security precautions to ensure the safety of the visiting statesmen. Armed soldiers were posted along the route from the airport and all roads nearby were closed to traffic. Officials have stressed that the talks will deal exclusively with economic matters, but observers believe political issues will also be covered—including a proposed inter-American peace force and joining forces against Communist subversion.
