ANTARCTIC SEASON

First Plane On Sunday The visit to Christchurch this month of two United States Navy ski-equipped Hercules will herald the beginning of the Antarctic summer operational season. The planes are from the Navy’s VX6 Squadron base at Quonset Point, Rhode Island. The first will land on Sunday and the next on August 28. They will provide crew familiarisation training. Both planes will return to their base, the first on August 24 the other on August 31. Next month four DCB jets, under charter to the Antarctic Support Force, will land at Christchurch with men and equipment for the forthcom ing season. During September the DCBs will replace the Boeing military transports used for the support effort last year. The first of the DCBs is due at Christchurch on September 5. It will have 165 passengers aboard. The commander of the Navy Support Force (Rear-Admira' F. E. Bakutis) is expected tc arrive on September 17. Tn October military aircraft will be used instead of the DCBs.
