Council Opposes Silo Scheme

An application from Fleming and Company, Ltd., for permission to build nine silos at its mill in Deans avenue was opposed by the Riccarton Borough Council at its meeting last night.

The council adopted a town-planning committee recommendation that the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board be informed that the council opposed the company’s application for a specified departure to erect the silos because: — It was not in the public interest. It would be a substantial extension of non-conform-ing use in a residential zone. It would tend to delay effective operation of the council's district scheme. It would detract from amenities. The council agreed that if the appeal board did grant the application, it should require that Deans avenue be not used by trucks, as this traffic would complicate problems at the nearby intersec-

tion of Feudal ton road and Deans avenue.

Other conditions suggested by the council were that the company be required to set aside enough land for trucks to park on company land and not on the road, that obtrusive advertising be removed, and that the appearance of buildings be improved, with trees to screen them from sight. The council approved in principle the erection of a 6500 sq ft factory at 14 Princess street, provided that not more than 75 per cent of the site is built over. The Town Clerk (Mr R. Sarjeant) was asked to write to the occupier of premises at Tyne street telling him that panel-beating was not allowed, and that if it continued, legal action would be taken.
