Shotgun Fired Over Prowler
A prowler, caught by two householders armed with a shotgun in Sydenham on Wednesday night, was later arrested by the police on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond. The two householders, Mr N. L. van der Lem, of 64 Longfellow street, and Mr S. Lipman of 51 King street, decided to keep watch because of frequent thefts of clothing from clothes lines in the area. They were in a garage, on a mattress, when Mrs van der Lem, who had been saying good night to her husband, came face to face at the corner of the house with the prowler about 11.15 p.m. The man ran off, but halted when Mr van der Lem fired the shotgun above his head. The police were called. The man was being taken to the patrol car when he escaped. He was caught after getting over a fence and taken, handcuffed, to the police station.
