Junior Soccer Trip To Hong Kong
The plan to send a New Zealand junior soccer team to England for an intensive flve-week training course under the guidance of a first division club is virtually assured of being abandoned. “The chances of any English side taking control of our team is remote,” said Mr C. L. Whyte at last night’s executive meeting of the New Zealand Football Association. Mr Whyte, who recently had talks with the leading soccer officials from many countries, said there was little chance of any English club coming forward to sponsor the team. “Hong Kong could be interested in a tour by an under--18 football team,” said Mr Whyte. Mr Whyte said that during his discussions with Hong Kong officials they said they would be pleased to look into the idea of a New Zealand team touring their country. If New Zealand met the travel costs Hong Kong could arrange things at its end. “In Hong Kong they sponsor youth football quite a lot, especially the under-20 age group“If we do send a team it will have to be after May,” said Mr Whyte. “Their season starts next month, and
goes straight through to May.” A committee member, Mr P. D. Osten, who is also a member -of the association’s junior council, was directed to approach the junior association about the Hong Kong tour, and report on its recommendations.
