FERTILISER IN RULE

Spreading Cost Increase (N.Z. Press Association* AUCKLAND, Aug. 11. The Bulk Fertilisers’ Association is to increase the cost of spreading fertiliser in some areas by up to 10 per cent. The association’s national president (Mr G. M. Mearns) said that in some cases the increases could be 3s a ton on the lower spreading rates (up to 3cwt an acre) but the higher rates would be less because the charge was on a graded scale. "As the conditions vary in each branch area the increased costs will be decided upon by the operators in the various districts,” he said. Mr Mearns said there would be no indiscriminate price increase of prices by members. “Operators are not looking to increase their margins of profit, but to preserve the margin that exists. This is essential if they are to continue to offer the service that they are at present giving,” he said. Mr Mearns said that in most areas this was the first increase by bulk-fertiliser operators since 1958. Association members annually spread 760,000 tons of fertiliser and 632,000 tons of lime.
