Peace Treaty Signed In Djakarta
(N Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA, August 11. Indonesia and Malaysia today signed a peace treaty ending three years of bitter hostilities and normalising relations between them. The agreement was signed by the Indonesian Foreign Minister, Mr Adam Malik, and the Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak, at exactly 12 noon, local time. The agreement said: 1 he Malaysian Government has agreed to give the people of Sarawak and Sabah the chance to reaffirm as soon as possible their position in the Malaysian Federation through independent and democratic elections. The Indonesian Government has agreed, and the Malaysian Government has accepted, that diplomatic relations will be restored immediately and diplomatic representations be set up as soon as possible. Both Governments have agreed to cease hostilities. With a flourish of a gold pen, Tun Razak put his name to the agreement, followed by Mr Malik.
