MILLS HOPES TO BE FIT FOR SHOT PUT

L. R. Mills, who injured a thigh muscle on his way to victory in the discus, will probably be fit for the men’s shot put final, to be decided on Thursday.

Mills is getting ultrasonic wave treatment, light massage and complete rest He withdrew from the heavy-weight weight-lifting which was held yesterday. “I think my chances of competing in the shot are about 50-50,” said Mills. ‘‘l'll have to have pain-killer on the day and this, plus the other treatment, should put me right.”

Mills's injury came on his fifth throw. “1 was Hat out and drove into the leg which collapsed under me,” said Mills. “The throw felt like a real good one and someone told me later it was round 190 ft.” The throw was discounted when Mills fell on to the throwing circle. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to have another throw,” said Mills, “so I had to sweat it out while Puce, of Canada, md Robin Tait (of New Zealand), had their final throws. Mills had only two good throws—his first and second. The first won him the gold medal, at 184 ft 2in, and the second was 177 ft 2in. TAIT SEVEN THROWS The bronze medal winner, Tait, was given seven throws —one more than the officially allowed six. Mills said that a foul was

called on Tait in his sixth throw for touching the circle. As the athletes packed up to leave, however, an official told Tait that the judge who had called the foul had doubts and would allow him another throw.
