MR C. J. WHITAKER (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. The sports editor of the “Auckland Star” from 1920 to 1940, Mr Cuthbert James Whitaker, died in Auckland yesterday, aged 88. He had served with the “Star” from 1911 until he retired in 1948. Starting his journalistic career with the “Southland Times," Mr Whitaker went to Mosgiel in 1899 as editor of the “Taieri Advocate,” but returned to Invercargill two years later. . He was chief reporter of the “Southland Times” when he obtained a position on the literary staff of the “Auckland Star." He was a prominent athlete and represented Southland at Rugby and cricket. He was a former president of the Auckland Journalists’ Union.
