IMPORTANCE OF DEBATING
Support For A Resurgence Debating and public speaking had an important role in the community, the DeputyMayor (Mr H. P. Smith) said when opening the thirty-third annual Canterbury Federated Debating Society’s competi tions. Mr Smith said that both he and the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) were prepared to assist a resurgence of the art. Results:— Novice prepared speech (Judge: Mr L. S. Boyles).—

McKay (Forum) 2, Mr J. R. Milligan (Forum) 3. Prepared speech (Judge: Mr G. Burns). —Mrs B. McCulloch (W.E.A. Club) 1, Mr D. Wiseman (W.E.A. Club) 2, Mr D. Dyson (Teachers’ College) 3. Impromptu speech (Judge: Father J. Loft). — Mr J. R. Milligan (Forum) 1, Mrs B. McCulloch (W.E.A. Club) 2, Mr V. E. McKay (Forum) 3. Debate (Judge: Mrs D. Sheat).—W.E.A. Club (Mrs B. McCulloch, Messrs T. Woodall and D. Wiseman) 1. Forum won the J. J. Slattery Cup for the winning team and Mr V. E. McKay won the Centennial Cup for the best speaker.
