ELECTION IN VIETNAM
Govt. Wants Observers (N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 9. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today he hoped international observation “in some form” of South Vietnam's elections in September would be possible. “The New Zealand Government supports the principle of international observers,” he said in Parliament. At the beginning of June, the Government of South Vietnam had asked the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, U Thant, to arrange for observers to be in Vietnam in September. “But in the face of objections —particularly from the Soviet Union—it became impossible for the United Nations to proceed.” said Mr Holyoake. “In spite of this set-back it is my hope that international observation in some form may yet prove possible.”
