Clarke Has To Take Second Place Again

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) KINGSTON. For the second time in the Kingston Games, the world record-holder, R. G. Clarke, was beaten into second place on Monday.

The three miles was won by the Kenyan, K. Keino. in a Commonwealth Games record of 12min 57.45ec. Keino’s time shattered the previous record of 13min 15sec set by M. G. Halberg, of New Zealand, at Cardiff in 1958 Clarke finished 15 yards behind in the sprint home and had to be content, again, with a silver medal. Pyne Outclassed The bronze medal went to i young Englishman, A. Rushmer. The two New Zealanders, A. G. Pyne and I. S. Studd. were outclassed. Pyne • finished ninth and Studd tenth. The race quickly settled to a front bunch of five, including Clirke and Keino, and a

main group of 30 to 40 yards back containing the two New Zealanders in about seventh and ninth places. K. Blackwood (Australia), then Keino and Clarke, set a sizzling pace and the leaders gradually opened a gap of 280 yards or more on the main bunch and gave Pyne and Studd little chance of finishing in the major placings. About mid-way, reached in 6min 27sec, Pyne and Studd looked as if they might make an attempt to catch the leaders, but it was a hopeless task and the race settled into a two-man battle between Clarke and Keino. Lost In Sprint

At the two miles Clarke had a slight advantage but when Keino decided to sprint, the Australian could not match his tremendous pace. In a very fast final lap the

.two leaders drew’ further away from the bunch and [only Rushmer got anywhere near them. Snell Record Goes i Another New, Zealand-he!d games record disappeared from the book when the first four runners in the mens 880 yards event all bettered P. G. Snell’s time of I min 47.65ec set at Perth in 1962 The new record of Imin 46.95ec was established by \ Clough, of Australia, who took the gold medal Snell’s long-time rival. G. Kerr, of Jamaica, with limn 47.25ec, in third place, was one of the four to break the old games record. • The only games track record now, held by a New Zealander is P. Welsh’s 3000 metres steeplechase time of Smin 29.65ec, which he set m his gold medal win on Saturday.
