MELBOURNE STILL BIDS

MELBOURNE, August 9. Melbourne will continue its bid to be host city for the 1974 Commonwealth (James in spite of competition from Christchurch, the Victorian Olympic Council decided last evening.
“The council will do all it can to get the 1974 games for Melbourne,” the chairman (Mr W. T. J. Uren) said after the meeting.
The council endorsed a decision that the Australian British Commonwealth Games Association apply to the British Commonwealth Games Federation for the fixture.
At a meeting of the British Commonwealth Games Federation in Kingston on Sunday, Australia gave formal notice of its intention to apply for the games. The New Zealand delegate
applied for Christchurch, which had earlier been defeated by Edinburgh in an application for the 1970 games. Mr Uren said he thought Melbourne had better conditions for the games than any other city in the Commonwealth, The venue for the 1974 games will not be decided until the 1970 games. Australia has already held the Commonwealth Games twice—at Sydney in 1938 and Perth in 1962. New Zealand has held them once—at Auckland in 1950.
