CANTERBURY, after its excellent display when it beat the touring Australian basketball team, will be the favourite to win the South Island women’s basketball tournament at Hagley Park on Saturday. Entries in the tournament are restricted to first grade teams with the leading South Island second grade team, in this case West Coast, competing by invitation. There will be one change in the Canterbury team that beat Australia. The captain, J. Harnett, is not avail-
able and she will be replaced by the New Zealand representative, J. Blair. Canterbury’s hardest game should be against Southland which has rearranged its team since being beaten easily by Australia. Last year Southland was runnerup to Rotorua at the national championships. Otago Is reported not to be up to its usual standard and could be matched by West Coast which was run-ner-up in the second grade at the national championships last season.
