NOXIOUS WEEDS

Akaroa Appeals Allowed, An appeal by Mr W. H. Archdall, owner of Femarnagh Farm, Ltd., Robinsons Bay, against a noxious weeds notice ordering the clearance of all hawthorn by September, was allowed by the Akaroa County Noxious Weeds Appeals Authority yesterday. Mr Archdall said he had owned the property for two years, and a considerable amount of work had been done. He had recently spent £6O on sowing alone. The noxious weeds inspector (Mr H. W. Fawcett) said he had inspected the property the previous day and found considerable work had been done. Dismissed An appeal by the proprietor of the Hilltop Hotel (Mr W. D. Barnes) against a notice to clear gorse and broom by December this year, was dismissed. Mr Barnes did not appear. In a letter Mr Barnes said he had spent £l5O on weed control in the last year. Gorse and broom had been sprayed very recently. Mr Fawcett said he had several times asked for the gorse and broom to be cleared and notices had been issued. Some work, but not a great deal, had been done. If the work was well on the way by December 31 he would be reasonably satisfied, Mr Fawcett said.
