Wrecked Cars Left Unlocked

Two cars which were stolen on Wednesday and Thursday evening this week and later found wrecked, had both been parked without being 'ocked, said DetectiveSuperintendent F. A. Gordon, head of the Christchurch C. 1.8., yesterday One of the cars was wrecked when hit by a train on the Clarence street railway crossing at 10.35 p.m. on Thursday. The two men in it were unharmed and ran off. A search by police and dogs did not locate them. The other car was found below a bank on the Summit road about three miles from Sumner. “Some of the stolen cars

are used for criminal purposes and there are some persons who take cars with the intention of wrecking them. “An offender in Auckland took five cars, all of the same make, and put them over Bastion point. He later admitted that he had taken the cars with the deliberate intention of wrecking them,” Mr Gordon said. He said that motorists who removed ignition keys and locked their vehicles whenever they parked them, on the street, in parking lots and at home, not only protected their own property but also helped reduce crime. No arrests had been made by the police last night in connexion with the two stolen, wrecked cars.
