SPEAKING CONTEST

Hillmorton Winner Murray Ryburne. of the Hillmorton High School, won the Canterbury area finals of the secondary schools’ public speaking contest sponsored by the Royal Overseas League. Murray Ryburne will now compete for the Anthony Eden Cup in the New Zealand finals to be held at Invercargill on August 31. Robin Jones, of Aranui High School, was second, and David James Flier, of Shirley Boys’ High School, was third in what was described as “a uniformly high and satisfactory performance” from all 15 competitors. The judges, Messrs G. Burns and J. G. Leggat, said they found the judging difficult. The subject for the contest was “The Hopes and Fears for the Multi-Racial Commonwealth.”
