Revello Lame After Schooling

A start for Revello in the Grand National Steeplechase next week seems unlikely.

The Te Awamutu jumper 1 knuckled over when doing 1 pace work on the sand after < schooling at Riccarton yesterday and was very lame in his near foreleg when walked , back. , “We’ll be on the road back ! (home earlier than I thought. I’m afraid,” said Revello's trainer and part-owner, W. J. . Craig, after a quick inspection and before he telephoned for ; a veterinary surgeon. ■ Ran About Revello had been ridden by 1 the amateur, R. A. Williams, in a round of the steeplechase i course with Triomphe (P. ’ Whiteman). He lost ground ■ at three fences because of a ; to run about on his ; 'approach, but it was a fairly 1 1 satisfactory first test over the country. Then he showed

keenness in striding work on the sand until he faltered on one of the turns. Triomphe was bleeding from a stifle cut after his round, but that was not considered either unusual or serious. Wheroma, ridden by his Waikanae part-owner, A. J. Koolman, jumped two brushes along the back with Triomphe and Revello, but was allowed to miss the kennels double, and three more fences before rejoining the others going to Cutts’s. The free-going Wheroma stood off at the big brush, but was in no trouble, landing well. The veteran Red Mars gelding is a free-going type, and should be in or near the front all the way in tomorrow’s Homeby Steeplechase.

Competent Round

There was no other jumping on the steeplechase course. The Wingatui trainer, H. A. Anderton, religiously keeps his horses to the trial steeplechase course in their schooling at Riccarton. Yesterday he sent out Jolly Fox to do a round of five fences on this course. With a competent display in the hands of M. Parr, Jolly Fox retained his place as one of the fancies for the Duke of Gloucester Cup. Newbury made a fair showing over a round of hurdles, but Prince Callan ran the first two of four flights down badly. For the third time this week Turtle was put to the pony hurdles at fast pace. He was accompanied by Eiffel Tower, and the Riverton stablemates showed skill in jumping at speed. Turtle has not raced since the autumn, 'but might not be the weakest link in a formidable bracket with Istan Light and Mosque in the Longbeach Hurdles tomorrow.
