RACING MANANA LIKELY PROSPECT

Brabazon Handicap At Riccarton

The Manana»B. Collins combination proved irresistable when tried for the first time at Rangiora in the autumn, and might be equally effective in the Brabazon Handicap at Riccarton tomorrow.

The Brabazon Handicap is the second leg of the TA.B. double at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting.

with two speedsters in the field is G. S. Barr. He prepares Danny Kaye and Kalimera, both light-weights and impressive graduates to open class in the last few months. Kalimera had a slight set- ’ back with an attack of boils, | but all has gone well for "Danny Kaye lately, and hei e impressed in his final gallop! 5 yesterday. £ -| Won Last Year Another stable pair are e Shakes, the Brabazon Handi-?-‘cap winner last year, and s’:Rae’s Hope. i Shakes won when fresh for it I the Murfitt stable at Ashbur--11; ton in the autumn, but his e;form since has suggested some i- decline in his powers. n| He did not measure up on ; his campaign at Trentham is earlier in the month, although ir.at the best of times, the Picrt’tavia gelding has not raced ? .|as well there as he does at I 4! Riccarton. 0 | An interesting Riccarton e : representative is Royal Stu-. dent, the product of a mating j made in the United States, a _ winner in England before _ bought for an Australian own- ! er, and also a winner at . Moonee Valley nearly two years ago. Lack of racing condition might weigh against Royal Student, but he would not be the first horse to sprint well ’■fresh. « I.’ . T ;t ■ r irst Leg Royal Student is in the W. lt A. Welton team and is a stableie mate of Research, which is n entitled to favouritism for the Camla Hack Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double. ’ Research has earned favp ouritism with two wins and a ie second at his last four starts. I” He has strengthened and J 1 settled with age and should !r run seven furlongs right out under 8-9. which will include ’• a 51b allowance. a Others with form to respect n ' are Irish Gloss, El Beka, Lynpidabelle. Quick Flight, Sho’s i shone. Sir Limond, Gold Marc u- ' and the Masterton-trained i Oriental. 4.1 El Beka and Shoshone have s.: been last-start winners over R-a mile and 35 yards at Washe- ■ dyke, and placed runs reI cently by Irish Gloss and Lyn»r dabelle will command respect I

Manana won this race three years ago before running third in Lei’s Winter Cup. He has had comparatively little racing in the meantime, his win at Rangiora coming after a spell of more than 12 months, but he has added the Waimate Cup as well to his winning record and his background looks hardly less im pressive than it did before his first Brabazon victory. Manana’s latest start gave him a fourth in the Wellington Racing Club’s Stewards' Handicap on July 9. He is the third top-weight with 8-8, and it is doubtful if Kumai and Gladaub, the two above him in the handicap, will beat him at seven furlongs. Fieldmaster, also on 8-8, is likely to develop stronger form over more ground, but there is good reason to expect sound races from Just Peter and Summer Magic, two Gore-trained runners in the field. Summer Magic recaptured something of his best spring three-year-old form in running second to Jester Jinks in the Claremont Handicap No. 2 at Washdyke on Monday. Setback The three-year-o'd programme of this Summertime colt was interrupted just when he seemed likely to be come a force among the best of his contemporaries, but rich compensation could come the way of his connexions in the next few weeks. Just Peter is one of the veterans of the field, but aftei two wins, one at Oamaru. the other (a dead-heat) at Wash dyke, he could be a match for the best of his youngei rivals. The Riccarton trainer. P. H Jones, will decide late on a start for Jester Jinks, Sum mer Magic’s conqueror or Monday. But the horse’s stablemate. Krazikid, will run probably well. Krazikid has early speed can run out seven furlongs and will receive more confi dent backing if the ground de teriorates. Another Riccarton trainei

for the prospects of these southern hacks. Sir Limond, a fair fourth over six furlongs at Washdyke on July 9, showed he has thrived in the meantime with a fast sprint in training yesterday. Oriental also pleased In his final gallop, shaping as if he would improve on his laststart fourth at Levin last week.
