The executive said in a statement today that recently sums of up to £l3 had changed hands. This was undesirable and against university regulations.

Many flrst-year students visited the common room, found gambling and concluded that it was “the accepted norm.” The executive said It had not banned card playing in the men’s and women's common rooms. The main common room, it said, should be a place where people could meet, talk, read and play chess. It should serve as a social centre for the university.
